OGIEK LAND RIGHTS AND RULINGS IMPLEMENTATION PEACEFUL PROTESTS

Supported by Het Actie Fonds , Netherlands. Goal of the action; To remind the Government, fairly to respond to the court cases Ogiek Community have won. To prove the importance of involving Ogiek Community in major decisiom making from the national level especially to do with environmental issues which triggered the evictions. To draw the attention of the world into this matter, especially where humanitarian issue is involved. To show that youth are ready to take the mantle from the elders and still push the Government towards implementation of the court cases.

Save Mau Forest CBO has launched a School Tree Planting Program as part of its broader mission to restore and conserve the Mau Forest ecosystem. This initiative integrates environmental education with hands-on tree planting activities, engaging students, teachers, parents, and local stakeholders to foster a culture of conservation from an early age.

Pilot Project – Masaita Primary School

Masaita Primary School was selected as the pilot site due to its strategic location and willingness of stakeholders to participate. In collaboration with environmental organizations in East Mau, the project was introduced to the school community, emphasizing the importance of afforestation in climate change mitigation and environmental restoration.

Objectives

  1. Increase Tree Cover: Establish tree nurseries and plant both indigenous and fruit trees within the school compound.
  2. Environmental Education: Train pupils and teachers on sustainable forestry, climate action, and conservation.
  3. Community Involvement: Engage parents, local leaders, and environmental stakeholders in tree planting and maintenance efforts.
  4. Sustainability & Expansion: Ensure long-term care for the trees while replicating the initiative in other schools across the region.

Implementation Plan.

Tree Nursery Development: Establish school-based tree nurseries to provide seedlings.

Training & Awareness: Conduct workshops on tree care, soil conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Tree Planting Events: Organize tree planting sessions aligned with the rainy season (starting in April).

Monitoring & Maintenance: Assign student eco-clubs to take responsibility for nurturing planted trees.

NEXT LEVEL FACILITY GRANT.

NEXT LEVEL FACILITY GRANT PROJECT. – Supported by Voices for Just Climate Action(VCA). This project was directed to grassroot initiatives carrying out climate change work who are amplifyng the work and quickly respond to emergencies, unforeseen activities or emerging opportunities that reverse/combats the adverse effects of climate change. Th funded activities contributed to soil conservation, reforestation and sustainable land management in the Mau Forest region and members of the community were able to be educated on the importance of using initial indigenous knowledge on safeguarding their landscapes. With the project, we are restoring River Njoro at Mau Forest Upper Catchment at Ogiek community areas. The initiative focuses on constructing terraces to control soil erosion and improve water retention, ensuring the sustainability of River Njoro. It also includes the establishment of indigenous tree nurseries to restore degraded forest areas with native species, enhancing biodiversity. As a Nature-Based Solution (NbS), bamboo is being planted along riverbanks due to its strong root system, which stabilizes soil, prevents erosion, and improves water quality. By engaging the Ogiek community, the project supports conservation-driven livelihoods while securing water sources and promoting long-term forest restoration.
